Man held for forging docus in credit card applications

Pune: A youth who lost money in the share market stole copies of personal documents of his neighbour to apply for credit cards in various banks after forging the documents. The youth was nabbed by the Cyber Crime Cell(CCC) of the City Police Crime Branch.

The arrested accused was identified as Smith Emanuel Salve (29) who stays near Swaraj Garden in Pimple Gurav. One Brijesh Nandan, a computer engineer in a telecom company, filed a complaint with the CCC that some unknown person had applied for credit cards in his name at five banks. Deputy Commissioner of Police S Hiremath formed a team and started the investigation. Senior Police inspector Radhika Phadke said, “The accused used his photo on the credit card application and would ask the person who called up for verification to come to some other location.”

“Due to alertness of Brijesh the  fraud came to light before he was cheated,” said Phadke.

When Smith was arrested, the police found he is Brijesh’s neighbour and had stolen the documents when they were lying in an envelope outside Brijesh’s home. The police said they will write to the banks to improve their third party verification process to prevent such frauds.

The police said Smith suffered loses in share trading and was finding ways to recover the lost amount.
The police team included Police Inspector Sanjay Kurundkar, Police Sub Inspector Sonali Fatangre, policemen Santosh Jadhav, Ajit Kurhe, Deepak Bhosale, Rajkumar Jaba, Deepak Mane, Tosif Mulla, Nitosh Shelar and Sharukh Shaikh.
