It was an evening of glamour, beauty and celebration as the 24 finalists from across the country walked the ramp and proved their mettle at the grand finale of Mrs Asia International India held in the city on Saturday at Amanora Town Centre.
Held every year, the pageant looks for new-age, empowered women who have achieved balance in their multi-faceted lives and have contributed significantly both to their families and society as a whole. This year, Shweta Tiwari from Jagdalpur bagged the coveted title of Mrs Asia International India and  Shweta Padda from Bhilai and Komal Pagrani from Indore became the first and second runners-up, respectively.
The 2014 pageant was based on the theme — ‘Beauty in Diversity’ — and celebrated the achievements of today’s women. Almost 6,000 ladies from cities like Ludhiana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Bengaluru, to name a few, took part in the preliminary rounds, of which 24 were lucky enough to be chosen as the finalists.
“The contestants were handpicked from all over India and were judged by a panel of judges from various fields. The finale included various rounds like personal interview, evening gown, fitness wear, ethnic wear and talent hunt,” said Deepali Phadnis, pageant director and Mrs Asia International 2012 who addressed a gathering before the grand finale. Fashion and Bollywood photographer Sameer Belvalkar, Kathak exponent Mugdha Pathak and skin specialist and dermatologist Dr Niteen Dhepe were the judges for the pageant.
Speaking to us before the event, Sapana Dourada, a glamorous mom and a successful entrepreneur from Goa, said, “I have been organising Mrs Goa for quite sometime now and got to know about this beauty pageant through one of the Mrs Asia International India contestants who I was grooming. So I thought of giving it a shot. I was very excited and ready to take up the challenge.”
One of the finalists from Bengaluru, Ashwini Jadhav Lala, was born and brought up in Pune. Married for 13 years, Ashwini, who is an electrical engineer and holds an MBA degree in finance and marketing, said, “I came to know about the pageant last year. Being a part of this contest, I realised that I had always nurtured a dream of taking part in a beauty pageant. My family also has been very supportive. I live in a family with four generations and they have all been very encouraging. I too take good care of them. Besides family, I have been doing a lot of social work and been a part of various camps that work for the disabled. I take it as my duty.”
