Pune: The Manisha National Billiards and Snooker Championship will begin with sub-junior (Under-18) billiards main draw and junior (Under-21) billiards qualifiers at PYC Hindu Gymkhana from Thursday.

The sub-junior billiards matches will be of one-hour duration, while the junior qualifying matches will be played over one-and-a-half hour. Over 70-90 matches will be held every day on all 13 tables, installed at PYC hall, said Tournament Director Salil Deshpande.

Sub-junior billiards final will be held on January 13.

In sub-junior category, Tamil Nadu’s S Shrikrishna is the top seeded cueist. He is enjoying a purple patch after defending both his billiards and snooker titles in the Indian Oil State-ranking tournament in Chennai.

He also reached the quarterfinals of the IBSF World billiards championship toppling seasoned campaigner B Bhaskar. Later he lost to Rupesh Shah.

Maharashtra’s Sparsh Pherwani is second seeded in this event. In 2016, he played in World Under-18 championship in Belgium reaching round of 32, and later on World Under-21, where was knocked out in the group stages.
