MUMBAI: “Canada and India are good friends and strong partners. We share similar values, proud histories and a natural bond as parliamentary democracies,” said Bardish Chagger, Canada’s Minister of Small Business and Tourism and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons who recently visited India.

Chagger visited the new solar array at National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) with Canadian Solar and Avesta. In her meeting with the Chairman of NCPA, she discussed the new opportunities for India and Canada to work together, as both the countries were among the 21 founding members of Mission Innovation, a global partnership that aims to double government investments in clean energy research and development and to spur similar private sector investments in clean technology.

“The Government of Canada supports the participation of Canadian firms in developing hydroelectric power projects in India, leveraging Canada’s sector capabilities as one the world’s largest producer of hydroelectricity,” Chagger added.

She also chaired a panel discussion at Zone Startups at BSE, Mumbai. The event was organised in collaboration with empoWer. The theme of this discussion was ‘Women Leader: Innovating, Inspiring and Building Nations’.

A Canada 150 business reception was also organised by the Consulate general of Canada in associations with Air Canada, Ocean Spray-Richberry group, Canada Keep Exploring on the occasion of Chagger’s visit. The evening saw representatives of the tourism industry as well as those of Indian and Canadian start-ups and small businesses. It was also revealed here that Air Canada will start direct flights between Mumbai and Toronto from July 1.

Minister Chagger’s visit to India is the seventh in the last eight months by a cabinet minister of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government.
