Pune: Bank officials from the city have refuted claims being made in a viral social media message stating that banks will remain shut on all Saturdays.

A message stating, “All banks will remain closed on every Saturday from June 1 onwards. The RBI has approved 5 days working for banks. Note: Timings will be from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm,” has been doing rounds in social media for nearly a month.
Bank officials have claimed that the message is fake and that Punekars must not pay heed to such messages.

Speaking to Sakal Times, the General Manager of Bank of Maharashtra, Rajkiran Bhoir, said the claims being made on WhatsApp are nothing but rumours. “We have not received any circular from the Reserve Bank of India in the matter. There is no notification even on the RBI website stating that bank branches will remain closed on Saturdays. The message is only a rumour,” Bhoir explained.

He further said that there was a demand for five days a week a few years ago. “There was a demand from bank employees for holidays on all Saturdays during wage revision about five years ago. However, the issue was resolved and bank holidays were declared on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month,” he said.

Another bank official re-iterated that the message is fake and people should avoid forwarding such messages.

“The United Federation of Bank Unions, which comprises nine trade unions, have had a long-standing demand for holidays on all Saturdays in its charter of demands that was submitted last year. However, neither the Indian Banks’ Association nor the Union Finance Ministry accepted the demand. Hence, this message is fake and must not be believed,” the bank official said.
