Pune: A 49-year-old woman, Jayashree More, a home-maker from the city can now walk again thanks to a spine surgery performed by doctors at Ruby Hall Clinic.

“I am very happy that I can walk again,” said Jayashree. Jayashree was bed-ridden with severe back pain and weakness in legs. She was shocked to know that she had tuberculosis of the spine.

“We tried many treatment methodologies but nothing worked. My mother started losing ability to lift her left leg,” said Jayashree’s daughter.

Dr Bhushan Khedkar, a consultant spine surgeon at Ruby Hall Clinic said, “When the patient first came to my office at Ruby Hall Clinic in Wanawadi, she had left foot dropping with a huge abscess surrounding the calsac. Her vertebrae were destroyed by the active disease which was evident on MRI.”

”It’s been just 10 days since my back surgery and I can walk again. I have regained the power in my left leg and my back isn’t hurting me that much,” said Jayashree.

Dr Khedkar added that the spine is commonly affected by skeletal tuberculosis especially if the patient is immuno compromised. “Patients usually don’t complain of leg pain or weakness of legs  unless there is compression on the spinal cord or nerve roots. A person may not have typical symptoms of fever and weight loss even though they have an underlying tubercular spondylodiscitis which happened in Jayashree’s case,” said Dr Khedkar.

He said the case wasn’t simple. “Early diagnosis and treatment is a must to avoid further neurodeficits and other complications. Jayashree is lucky as she regained power in her legs because she presented at an early stage of the disease but this may not occur all the time with all the patients,” added Dr Khedkar.
