Mumbai: After a demand to ban Shiv Sena’s mouthpiece Saamana and its editor for violating the Model Code of Conduct, NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik condemned the demand for ban and alleged that the BJP has set aside Rs 500 crore for the poll campaign. The BJP itself is violating the code of conduct by publishing advertisements without mentioning the publisher, Malik alleged.

State Election Commission, State BJP spokesperson, wrote to the State Election Commission (SEC) demanding action against Saamana. By printing and distributing the party mouthpiece, an attempt to influence the voter was being made, she alleged, referring to Saamana’s edition on February 15 in Aurangabad.

“We also demand an inquiry on Saamana’s editorial usage and whether expenses of the newspaper are included in the campaign expenditure of Shiv Sena. If not, then it is a case of paid articles,” said Shalini, requesting the SEC to issue necessary instructions for free and fair elections.

Malik said that the BJP is trying to throttle the voice of the newspapers that are writing against them. Recently, the party tried to shut the voice of news channels. “Media is the fourth pillar of democracy and this is an attempt to murder democracy,” he alleged.

“How can a political party demand that a newspaper be shut for three days during the voting for the civic body polls?” Malik asked.

“The BJP has set aside Rs 500 crore for the election campaign and they are trying to win the election with the help of money power. These funds should be added to the expenses of all BJP candidates,” he demanded.
