The proper positioning and maintenance of bus stops must surely be at the bottom of the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML)’s agenda. With no dedicated department for the management of the 5,000-odd bus-stops in the city, the task of their governance is left to the private contractors who pay little heed to commuters’ needs, says Prasad Joshi.

‘In growing cities, biodiversity is bound to be damaged’ - a cliché put into circulation when there are discussions about maintaining balance between growth and sustainability in urban areas. But, Dharmaraj Patil , Programme Officer at the Centre for Environment Education , calls it lethargy in planning and talks about the importance of open plots in sustaining the richness of the gene pools of species in urban ecology.

Any fast-developing metropolis will have to contend with an equally fast-increasing crime rate. What needs to be understood is that the job of the government law enforcement agency (that is, the police) is to protect society as a whole. They simply cannot be expected to protect each and every person or establishment individually.   Neither can they be expected to prevent crimes.

Sukhdeep Arora, Director, Checkmate Security Services Private Ltd   While people in India invest crores of rupees in real estate and properties, not even one per cent of this is spent on the security aspect, or for that matter, on safeguarding their investments, which is tragic.

It was about five years back that cricket lovers in Pune last witnessed a One-Day International cricket match. They have not yet seen a Test match in Pune.   This state of affairs is due to the fact that the only stadium in the city where international class cricket matches can be played is the Nehru Stadium, and it majorly owned by the Pune Municipal Corporation. And it barely seats about 25,000 spectators.

Almost exactly a year back, in this same column, I had written :   Over the last 20 years the PMC has turned the lives of people in the nearby Urali Devachi village into a toxic hell by dumping over a 100 truckloads of Pune’s garbage everyday in the village.   This happens simply because this city does not segregate its wet and dry garbage.
