PUNE: Lohsar, a village in Pathardi tehsil of Ahmednagar district, became the fourth village in the district where at least one woman from every family has become a member of the Tanishka Women's Dignity Forum. Taradgaon, Dhondgaon and Jakhangaon were the previous three. The event was celebrated by raising a 'Gudhi' in the presence of district collector Dr Sanjeev Kumar and police superintendent Raosaheb Shinde.

PUNE: The draw of contestants for the Jalan Maple Group presents Sakal Dhol-Tasha Contest 2013 was declared on Tuesday. The competition, which takes the tradition of beating drums to a new level, will kick start in the city on Thursday. Fifty contestants have confirmed their participation with enthusiastic troupes from the city and the district as well as other districts like Nashik, Kolhapur, Beed, Solapur, Ahmednagar vying for honours.

PUNE: Political parties and social organisations have called for a bandh in the city today to protest the murder of anti-superstition crusader Narendra Dabholkar here. A protest march was taken out by students and citizens against the murder of the activist, who spearheaded the anti-superstition movement in Maharashtra and pressed for an enactment of law to ban black magic and inhuman practices.

PUNE: The Pune division of the Central Railway has kicked off a drive to prevent the sticking of posters inside trains and on platforms. The drive has been initiated to ensure cleanliness of the trains and platforms. “Trains and platforms are used to put up posters on job offers, information on missing persons, advertising products or holiday destinations etc. Putting up such posters is illegal unless the Railways grants permission.

PUNE: The Students Teacher Ratio (STR) in Pune schools has increased from 30:1 in 2011-12 to 32:1 in 2012-13, jeopardising individual attention to each student. Aided primary schools are worst hit as more than 31 per cent of them have STR above 30:1. Also, 7.6 per cent government schools and 15.3 per cent unaided schools have above 30:1 STR, according to the data collected by the District Information System for Education (DISE).

PUNE: Government’s ban on duty-free import of high-end flat screen plasma TV sets has brought cheers to the electronic industry. As a part of government’s efforts to curb imports, which is one of the reasons for falling currency, it decided to impose a 36.5 per cent additional duty on import of high end plasmas. Consumer Electronics & Appliances Manufacturers Association (CEAMA) has welcomed the ban.

PIMPRI: Two leopards - Jeri and Tara - have been shifted to the Katraj-based Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre of Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park from the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation-run, Bahinabai Chaudhari Zoo. The decision was taken as per the Central Zoo Authorities' (CZA) norms, which states that animals cannot be kept in congested spaces.
