By C S Pathak   We have been using the adage, old is gold, so frequently that we don't perceive its real meaning. The word old has many connotations, Human beings grow from young to old, new things and possessions become old, novel ideas become old, innovations become old, ans new fashions become old.         With the passage of time there is a transformation in the form, it decays.

By Nitin Garg   The guru-shishya parampara in the Indian culture has always been an important aspect of learning. In some sense, it is the very soul of the tradition, and embodies the living and breathing relationship between the master and the pupil. Having evolved from the era of seers, the tradition signifies complete emotional, intellectual and spiritual surrender of the ardent shishya to the guru.

Aamir Khan's "Peepli (Live)" deals with news channel journalism's focus on trivial issues and their constant obsession with outsmarting the rivals and pocketing higher TRPs. Its first journalism-linked scene shows a news channel beginning a news bulletin with a breaking news announcing Shilpa Shetty's marriage with Prince William. In the present milieu, such breaking news is no laughing matter.

By P. Raman   The UPA government has perfected a familiar pattern of crisis management in Parliament. Began with the bitter confrontation in July 2008, and repeated during the cut motion this year, the model has been fairly successful.   It was tried this month again with adequate care in the case of the nuclear liability bill. It proved third time a bit unlucky.

Times have changed so much. Things were different when we were young.” Sounds so familiar. Every elderly person, who has not been able to adjust well to modern times and changing values, blurts out the sentiment. “The reasons why you young girls want a divorce are so flimsy. We have a communication problem here.

By Praful Bidwai   What the Communist Party of India (Marxist) dreaded the most in West Bengal, its bastion for 33 years, has happened. Mamata Banerjee of the Trinamool Congress (TC) held an extremely well-attended rally at Lalgarh in the Jangalmahal bordering Jharkhand on August 9, enlisted the support of the People’s Committee against Police Atrocities (PCPA), and threw down the gauntlet to the Left Front.

By CHAITANYA CHARAN DAS   Question: Spiritual people often fast on certain occasions, thus depriving themselves of natural bodily needs. Isn’t such fasting an unnecessary self-torture?   Answer: Not at all. To the contrary, for many people, their daily gorging of food is an unnecessary self-torture. WHO statistics show that over a billion suffer obesity, whereas 800 million people suffer undernourishment.

By AMULYA GANGULY   Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that his country has to bow its head in shame after the latest match and spot-fixing scandal involving its cricket team. But Pakistan is a country which has to be ashamed of many things, starting with the disgrace of being regarded as the epicentre of terrorism.

It’s amazing what Indian electronic media can find worth carrying for one full day, and what it can make some people do. The latest example is that of the Sri Lanka offie Suraj Randiv’s no-ball, which denied Virender Sehwag a century. Without doubt, Randiv’s act has been ridiculous, childish, and according to many, against the “spirit of cricket,” if such a thing does exist.

By Prasanto K Roy   You’re a Delhi-based wannabe terrorist needing to communicate with your handlers. What do you do? Invisible-ink notes are passe, as are carrier pigeons. You will, of course, use electronic options. Like email. Walk into a cyber cafe, log into a G-mail or Yahoo account. Don’t use an account in your own name. And don’t send email.
